A new wine this year, made for Oddbins, but we have kept back a few bottles for us! Pure Carignan from the 80 year old La Roque vineyard at Domaine of the Bee. Low yielding, concentrated and vibrant.
Vibrant dark black
Big, black, bramble fruit with a slatey minerality, and some softening, supportive oak.
This is a concentrated wine with loads of power and length. A luscious and big wine with very approachable fruit and moderate tannins. Layers of black and red cherry fruit are combined with wafts of herbs and vanilla.
- Winemaking Notes
From a one hectare vineyard of 80+ year-old Garignan vines. Bush vines are hand-tended, and shoot removal and green harvesting ensure a very well balanced crop of fully ripe grapes. Hand harvested into small baskets and destemming without crushing to allow some intra-cellular fermentation to release colour prior to the full alcoholic fermentation. Slow temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel and a couple of 500L barrels before gentle pressing, and maturation in 2 x 500L barrels one new, and one 3 years old. No eggs or dairy used.
- Growing Conditions
A very hot June and July quickly ripened our Carignan, and a much cooler August helped to retain acidity and freshness in the grapes.
- Food Pairing
Carignan is espcially good with charcuterie and wold boar sausage, but it also pairs well with grilled lamb, and most barbequed meats.
No one has given their opinion yet.

Closed nose with just a bit of spice. Much more extrovert on the palate, giving pepper, blackberry, tar and some sweet spices too. Superfine tannins coat the palate, helping the long finish. Well-balanced high acidity too. (RH)
Lovely, ripe berry fruits, graphite, slate and Rosemary herbs tumble out of the glass, with a juicy, supple palate and a fresh finish.
